Literacy education in developed countries is strong, but the challenge has shifted from learning to read to understanding the meaning of texts. Many children, particularly boys, struggle with deeply comprehending textbook content. This difficulty is partly due to a decline in leisure reading, which traditionally reinforced literacy skills. Teachers must focus on comprehension by using stress-free methods and including texts chosen by children themselves. Parental support, such as reading aloud and using apps like Tale Reader, plays a crucial role in fostering literacy development.

Professor Heikki Lyytinen's Norman Geschwind Memorial Lecture at the 2024 IDA Conference explored key findings on the causes and treatments of reading problems, with insights from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia. The presentation highlighted preventive strategies for children at risk and methods to enhance reading comprehension. Download the presentation slides here.
This review highlights our research endeavors to empower children to attain full literacy by cultivating their ability to comprehend and interpret written text. By fostering a deep understanding of reading comprehension, we provide students with optimal learning opportunities that equip them with the skills to succeed.
Learning knowledge efficiently by reading requires a skill which we can call full literacy (FL) reflected in PISA results. It can be acquired in two ways. One has first to learn the basic reading skill (BRS), which means readiness to decode or sound out text accurately and fluently. Because BRS is not enough for FL one had to take a second step.
Heikki Lyytinen tells about the problem of literacy and presents possible solutions for it at the Reimagining Teachers and Teacher Education for Our Futures conference in Helsinki, 18.6.2024.
